With so many different types of jewelers loupes available, it can be difficult choosing the perfect one for your application. They can range in magnification power, size and quality. Some magnify objects one times greater than the naked eye and others magnify as much as 30 times greater than the naked eye. There are a few common magnification levels and each one has its own use.
Which one should you use? Here are the most common ones.
Goldring
A 10x loupe will magnify objects 10 times. These are great for looking at coins. You can easily locate mint marks and determine a coin's condition. They also make the perfect first jeweler's loupe. A 20x loupe will magnify objects 20 times. These are also a great for looking at coins. You can also use them to identify hallmarks on jewelry. Is that gold ring 10 karat, 14 karat or 18 karat? A 30x loupe will maginfy objects 30 times. These are perfect for looking at diamonds and other precious gems. If there are any flaws you will see them with a 30x loupe.
If you are like me, then getting all three makes perfect sense. Luckily you can get a set of jewelers loupes that will usually consist of the most common magnification levels. There are some that have only one or two and there are some that have as many as six in the set. The best thing about these sets would have to be the price. Some sets cost less than a single loupe. Do what I did and pick up a set.
